Manuscripts

30 watercolour illustrations of flowers, each with a manuscript caption, mounted in a contemporary sketchbook, tissue guards, note to top front free endpaper reading “ with love & good wishes for June 12th”, original green morocco, spine gilt, boards gilt with floral motifs, a.e.g., boards a little rubbed, occasional spotting not affecting drawings, c.1890

This endearing collection of illustrations include several species of flower in each page, accompanied by facts about the flowers.

“The Vervain frequently changes the colour of the leaves”

The majority of the plants are native to Britain, and include recognisable species such as fox-glove, daisies, dandelions, evening primrose, geraniums, hyacinths, and wild corn-flowers.

A delightful, although slightly naive, study of flowers in Victorian England.
