A Scarce First Edition of John-Henry Grose’s famous work.
In 1750 Grose travelled to Bombay as a writer for the British East India Company. A Voyage to the East Indies is an account of his journey to India in the late Moghul period, with descriptions of 18th century India. He also writes an account of the war of 1756-63, in which the British East India Company largely eliminated France as a competitor for control of India and established the basis for British rule that lasted two centuries.
A second expanded edition was published in 1766 but this first edition is scarce, there being only 95 names on the subscribers list. No copies online.
